Seeing Jesus in all of scripture
We conclude this series with four important things to consider when reading our bibles.
Are good works important and who are they for? That's the conversation in this message, how we hear the word and bear much fruit.
True understanding is deeper than just mental ascent or accumulating information, it's apprehending and receiving by faith. God's love, peace and grace aren't something we can wrap our minds around...but we don't have to, just receive it as a gift!
Just because we hear or read something, doesn't mean that we understand it. In this message, we begin a conversation about true knowledge and true understanding as it relates to the word of God.
It's common to hear the parable of the sower and kick into work-mode, just make ourselves good soil and we'll bear much fruit for God. Our philosophy is "don't just stand there, do something." Jesus explains that the work of God is believing, "don't just do something, stand there."
Samson is an icon of one of our favorite qualities, strength. In this message we consider the freedom that we have to be weak, to not have it all together, and the beauty of leaning on Christ's strength and grace for us.
The topic of David is one of the most popular sources in the bible for sermons, illustrations and inspiration. We tend to see it as the ultimate underdog story, which can certainly relate to.
It's common to reduce the bible to a book of rules, morals and information. It's only when the Holy Spirit illuminates the scriptures in our hearts, that we begin to see it for what is really is...not a list of 'what's', but a Who.
The bible isn't a book of moral heroes that we're meant to emulate, it's meant to paint a vivid picture of Jesus. In this message, we examine the life of Moses, and consider all the aspects of his story that point us to the coming Savior, more than 1500 years later.
We tend to read the bible through the lens of self. It's little more than a book of tips and tricks for a better and more moral life. The bible isn't fundamentally about the christian, it's about Jesus.
